Poetically Sweet & Spooky Stuff
While we do a lot of skull illusions, few seem as romantic and touching as these three. In fact, Vurdlak already posted one by artist Karl Kwasny, who did the first and last ones in this post. I have to admit, I am attracted to Kwasny’s art for the very same reason Vurdlak is – the clean lines with sweet imagery make them hard to ignore, especially when paired with a spooky poem, like the one accompanying Karl’s Sisters illusion:
You’d better watch your footing
as the ground’s like thickened cream
there’s an awful secret
waiting down beside the stream
This next illusion was done by DeviantArt user MelloLover. While it might not come with a lovely poem like the one above, the artwork itself, adorned with the title Some of Us Change is simply beautiful. Everything about this work seems to invoke a story of dying love and a heartache…
Lastly, another impressive work by Karl Kwasny, even though not having a poem attached to it, is still beautiful and tragic as it shows the two boys back to back against a full moon.
What do you guys think? Do these works make you feel for lost loves and deceased loved ones? Or are they too sugary-sweet and tragic to swallow?

The Dark Knight Rises Poster
Last summer I’ve showed you an early teaser for the upcoming Hollywood Batman sequel, titled “The Dark Knight Rises“. Now that we’re just few months from the movie being released, let me show you another illusory poster I’ve stumbled upon lately. Those of you familiar with the plot will probably see the illusion faster than the rest, but either way it works great.
Am not 100% certain whether this poster is part of the official campaign, or just some cool fan-art homage to the franchise. Still, you should be able to see both the main character and the villain present somewhere in it. I just hope you like it!
Oh, and need I mention that we’re just couple of fans away from our 30,000th Facebook fan? If you like this site, please help us share the buzz. You can contribute by mentioning us to your friends and family, as well as sharing our channel on FB!

VIDEO 3D Perspective Illusion
I’ve been observing lately which of the posts get most of your attention, and unsurprisingly it turns out those articles featuring a video of some sort gained most recognition. So, let me show you another interesting optical illusion video dealing with perspective. It works in a similar manner Vans commercial did. You can see an even better example used for this Optical Illusion printer.
So go ahead, and before you start playing the video below – guess which of the objects are real, and which aren’t!
Have you guessed correctly? There is even an online tutorial posted on Istructables where you can learn how to make similar perspective illusions of your own! Check what one our fans, a well known Tattoo artist Greg “Grease” Lehman, did by himself! Hope you liked this video as much as I did…

VIDEO Coffee Can Optical Illusion
As always, greeenpro continues to amaze us with his regular optical illusion video creations. One of his latest flicks includes a spooky coffee can that follows you as you move across the room. If you never saw this effect in action before, I promise you’ll be amazed!
Think it all started with the Little Green Dragon from our very beginnings, but I could be wrong. Einstein’s face illusion was as effective, and afterwards much more examples followed. One of my favorites was the “Janek’s Nuts” video. Check them all out once you finish viewing the video below! Oh, and BTW I just started building our presence on the mighty Google+ social network, so be sure to join our channel if you already haven’t! You can find some cool illusion gifs there, ones that were little impractical to feature on this site…

Who’s Hugging Who?
Here’s another accidental optical illusion photo that’s been circulating our Facebook channel lately. When I first saw it, it seemed as if the guy’s head wasn’t in proportion with rest of his body… Only then I realized his girlfriend wasn’t the one reading the newspapers. Instead, she is the one standing behind the couch and hugging her boyfriend. It becomes harder to see the illusion once you understand what is going on here… You decide if it’s good!

Heikie Weber’s Fantastic Flooring
Imagine stepping into a room in the local art museum and suddenly not knowing where to step because the ground appears to be completely uneven. But that’s exactly what would happen if you happen to visit Kunstraum München in Munich, Germany. At least, if you happened to visit after Heikie Weber finished putting her installations up at the gallery.
That’s because the artist’s surreal creations convert ordinary rooms into mind-melding creations that seem impossible to walk on…of course, with art this fantastic, it seems a shame to trod on it anyway! But the most impressive part is how Heike does it…
From gentle, sea-like blue waves to red wobbling carpets that look even stranger when reflected in the mirror, Miss Weber’s creations turn something as simple as walking through a museum into a mind-altering experience.
Perhaps just as impressive as the actual outcome though, is the way in which Weber actually creates her masterpieces -one line at a time. That’s right, each of these massive installations were created with nothing more than a colored permanent marker and the steady hand of the artist. Imagine how time consuming these projects are, as some of the rooms used in her installations have measured almost 2,000 square feet in size. That’s a whole lot of markers and even more hand cramps.
Even so, the results are no doubt worth the hard work, as the flowing flooring really makes us stop and think about the ground we are walking upon. And isn’t the entire point of art to get the viewer to think?

Frazz’ Optical Illusion Oak Tree
Dunno whether you’ve heard of Frazz or not (I haven’t), but I guess it’s a popular comic in western hemisphere. From what I’ve learned, the comic regularly appears in over 200 newspapers worldwide, including the Los Angeles Times, Seattle Times, Chicago Tribune and Detroit News. Invented by Jef Mallett, it follows the adventures of an unexpected role model – an elementary-school janitor who’s also a Renaissance man. While he’s sweeping the hall, he’s whistling Beethoven. Or Lyle Lovett. He paints the woodwork in the classrooms; he paints a Da Vinci on the cafeteria wall. He’s a trusted authority figure who is every kid’s buddy. One such recent comic, included an optical illusion I thought you might like. How long does it take before you see it? Enjoy!
Deep In The Forest…
Karl Kwasny is an Australian illustrator, currently based in Manhattan, New York. Few days ago one of our readers (thanks Neli!) sent me this illustration Karl made, followed by a poem which can be found immediately after the picture. I tend not to post skull illusions that often, probably cause we’ve seen so many, but occasionally such a nice item appears it would be shame had we left it aside. The illusion it hides is quite easy to see, and the story it holds is for you to imagine!
Deep in the forest, where heavy feet sink,
you mightn’t be quite as alone as you think!

Follow The Spiral!
Every once in a while the moment arrives for a complete visual redesign of this website! A total makeover, if you prefer. Reasons are many; trends change, web-design advances… but most importantly -I get tired working in the same surrounding and need something to boost myself in order to continue updating this blog with same enthusiasm!
Up-till now, visual design of Mighty Optical Illusions was done by myself. Obviously, it didn’t take very long before I’ve reached my limits. For a control-freak and detail-obsessed person I am, admitting this wasn’t the easy part. Yet it helped tremendously in freeing myself and in finding the right person to do it. It was about time to outsource design to a professional!
Before I introduce the proposed idea, and go live with our new identity, there are still some minor details to be polished. Still, I’d REALLY appreciate to hear your thoughts and suggestions! So here it goes – below you may find the early mockup of our new appearance. What do you make of it? Be sure to open the template in full size before you make up your mind. I still haven’t decided should we keep the grayish header bar (reserved for advertisement), as well as the current logo suggestion? How about the general feel? What would you add/change? Looking forward to hear your opinion! …Oh, almost forgot to mention the illusion above – it appears there is one continuous black and white spiral, while in fact there are many concentric circles inside!

Dove and Peace Optical Illusion
Just in time for Christmas, I’ve dug up this marvelous painting by world-famous Octavio Ocampo. What at first seems as randomly scattered flock of doves, when observed closer makes a portrait of a beautiful female face.
What you probably knew from before – Dove (domesticated Rock Pigeon, usually white in color) is a traditional Christian symbol of love and peace. According to the biblical story, after the flood, a dove was released by Noah in order to seek for land. When it returned back to Ark carrying an olive leaf in its beak, it then became clear to Noah that somewhere out there, flood has withdrawn and land has emerged!
So, in spirit of Christmas, no matter which faith you belong to (and even if you don’t care much about religion), I wish you all a peaceful and merry Christmas! Stay well my friends, and be sure to remember -one person DOES make a difference. Only those “foolish” enough to think they can change the world, end up changing it!

M.C. Escher Meets Portal
If you’re familiar with the computer game called Portal, then you know just how complex the imaginary world filled with teleportation portals can be. That’s why it’s such a perfect match for the world M.C. Escher imagined, particularly his famous Relativity piece. While we have featured a lot of artist interpretations on this classic artwork, given Portal mash up by DeviantArt user linkitch just might be one of the most fitting to the original theme. The world it depicts is too complex to ever really understand or properly navigate. Indeed, if Escher were still alive, he would almost certainly take an interest in playing Portal. This creation took nine hours to make, as the artist had to collect reference material from Relativity and Portal and then recreate them in his own 3D space. He even uploaded an image detailing the creation of the final artwork, which you might find after the jump…

Hue Optical Illusion
Arjen Goldschmidt has sent in what appears to be the best (proof-endorsed) color optical illusion I have seen up to date! Below examples showcase embedded lines of seemingly different colors. The reason they look different is because our brain judges the color of an object by comparing it to surrounding colors. So without us even knowing it, in first example, our brains compare the flowing red stripes to the yellow stripes, forcing us to think they are orange. The blue stripes make the red ones appear much darker -almost purple, even though they are exactly the same color! This is just one of the examples why you cannot trust what you see even with your own eyes. Next time someone swears they saw Jesus, UFO, or a ghost, show them this animation ;)

Hue is one of the main properties of a color, defined technically as “the degree to which a stimulus can be described as similar to or different from stimuli that are described as red, green, blue, and yellow” (those beeing the unique hues). The other main correlatives of color appearance are colorfulness, chroma, saturation, lightness, and brightness.

In painting color theory, a hue refers to a pure color—one without tint or shade (added white or black pigment, respectively). A hue is also an element of the color wheel. Hues are first processed in the brain in areas in the extended V4 called globs.

“Open Box” Art Installations
When is an open box more than just a piece of cardboard? When it’s part of Krystina Naylor’s fantastic Open Box art installation featured at the Saatchi Gallery in London. Yes, at first glance, these may look like a boring old cardboard boxes that you might use to move your home possessions in, but they are actually completely functionless sculptures designed purely to manipulate the way you observe objects around you.
When you walk around the “boxes” and view them from another angle, you quickly realize that Krystina Naylor took two uniquely shaped sculptures and then painted them to perfectly match their surrounding locations in the gallery so they appear as boxes when viewed from the right angle.
And that’s when you realize that these plain cardboard boxes are actually clever works of art that examine the viewer’s perception of the world they live in. And isn’t that what all good art is supposed to accomplish?

Impolite Optical Illusions Gallery
I receive over a dozen illusion submissions each day, and sometimes these submissions include somewhat “edgy” content. The problem is, they often work really well – sometimes even too well to be precise! Then it comes to me to decide how should I handle this situation most precociously.
Even though I may endorse such optical illusions that ONLY imply NSFW content (while in reality being perfectly safe), I still wouldn’t want them showing inside your desktop widgets and gadgets, potentially bringing you in awkward situation of some sort. Thus, I have decided to place this simple, non-related socket illusion (above) to have something to fill your gadget with. Before you start complaining how these might lack taste, I can assure you the illusions they hold work really great! Hope you like what you’re about to see inside this article! Looking forward reading your comments.

Oleg Shuplyak’s Illusory Paintings
As it has been confirmed over and over again, sometimes there is much more to the eye than you can initially perceive. This specially goes for the items that have been featured on Mighty Optical Illusions website. Today’s featured artist comes from Ukraine, and is widely recognized because of his illusory oil paintings. His name is Oleg Shuplyak. The gallery you’re about to see hides a surreal world once you take a look at it more closely. Through carefully placed objects, characters, coloring and shadows, there is a second image in the painting which creates an optical illusion.
I’m not sure whether this artist was more influenced by Sandro Del Prete’s opus or works done by famous Octavio Ocampo, but those of you following this website for some time will immediately notice the resemblance! Just like Sandro, Oleg’s works usually feature a portrait of famous personalities. Go through the gallery below and see how many of them can you recognize. Van Gogh, Sigmund Freud and Salvador Dali are just few among dozens.
With works like these, it’s sometimes hard for the author to balance the weight of both images. Personally, I’m more fond of illusions where the “constructed”, 2nd image is more subtile. Oleg on the other hand, does quite opposite – The second image is so easily observable in some paintings, that you can actually miss the first one consisting of harmless landscape or characters in different settings. What you have to do then, is observe the painting more closely to actually see the initial setting and not concentrate on the faces. True skill of such artist is then evaluated by the fact how well did he construct the illusion, and whether the parts of landscapes constructing the illusion have useful part in the original setting. Artists often trap themselves by forcefully adding elements needed to construct the illusion, which don’t actually play their part well in the original setting. In my opinion, Oleg has mastered the technique just like Sandro did, and each part in his paintings seamlessly works in both images, the first “apparent” one, as well as the “hidden” illusory one. So, how many faces did you recognize? Which of his paintings did you like the most?

Imaginary Spiral Optical Illusion
James Thomas Fields has created a very strong optical illusion effect, which gives the illusion of appearing and disappearing spiral lines. Just look at the pattern James originally shared via our FB channel. First time you look at it, there is a big chance you won’t go into details. Now if someone hid the picture from you after a moment and asked from you to describe what you have just seen moments ago, your answer would probably end up something like this – “I think it showed a spiral that narrowed down to a central white spot. At the same time the spiral was covered with some kind of ying-and-yang overlaying pattern.” Even though not far from truth, the real deal is that there were no actual spirals present at all! Now if you look at the picture once again, and try and focus on the seemingly present spiral lines, you’ll soon discover there really aren’t any… Good job James!

Sideway Face Optical Illusion
Here’s a disturbing photo-manipulation that has been circulating Facebook for some time now. I couldn’t ignore all the requests for it to be featured no more. It’s like more than a dozen of you have submitted it to me over the last week. At first I wasn’t that impressed, but as I kept re-checking the pic each time someone re-sent it to me, finally have I seen the illusion! Even-though this photo has been heavily manipulated, the illusion stands perfect! So, what do you make of it? Do you see the man standing sideways (profile), or do you see it as a partial frontal shot (a portrait)? It works both ways! Perhaps them police officers in charge of taking mug-shots of criminals could re-think their practice and go with this new approach to save film :D Something similar we have already featured before, but this one works much better, I think! BTW another take on this illusion can be seen inside this article (if you read this off of homepage).

See Your Little Ones Grow!
I have just received this optical illusion from my former classmate – it’s a promotional poster for some sort of product called Horlicks. I’m not gonna tell you what the the illusion here really is, as I have confidence you’ll manage to spot on your own. I’m sure you will find it sooner or later. Yet, there is a chance you won’t like it as much as I did (which is mostly because it managed to fool me when I first saw it). The only hint I can give you is this: if you think you’re seeing a hand holding a magnifying glass, think again! BTW, I was surprised how no one answered my earlier question :( !?

Optical Illusion Cow
There was this cow… everybody knew she was special, but no one could say why. She wasn’t particularly good at math, she didn’t produce world’s best milk, she didn’t have any connection with world’s most famous chocolate brand to push her in showbiz, yet even in her early days she showed great talent for optical illusions! This was the category she truly conquered. Even further, she brought great joy to everyone she met. Can you see why she is so special? If you have no clue whatsoever, you may want to check her distant relative first – obviously the talent runs in her family!

Yes or No? Make Up Your Mind!
Originally discovered and submitted by Hans Von Mulders ***man, I’d kill for having aristocratic Von in my name!***, an incredible ambiguous sculpture you’re about to see was produced by artist called Markus Raetez. What from one angle looks as YES, completely changes in meaning and shape if you look at it from a different angle. So is it YES or NO in the end? Or maybe it’s both! Make up your mind, already!
If these kind of installations ring a bell, you’re right – artists like Guido Moretti and late Shigeo Fukuda experimented heavily with similar kind of ambiguous forms. If you haven’t already, be sure to check Underground Piano from Fukuda and Guido Moretti’s works of art. Let me show you how it works below:

Update: It appears the illusion works flawlessly in other languages to! First two appear to be Spanish and French versions, while I can’t seem to work out the last one on the right? Is it Klingon?
Maybe Soup is currently being updated? I'll try again automatically in a few seconds...
